Peggy Ann Freeman, better known by her stage name Donyale Luna, was a model and actress from the United States who achieved fame in Western Europe in the late 1960s. Luna was the first African-American model to appear on the cover of the British edition of Vogue in March 1966.

Law Roach claims that there are a lot of similarities between Zendaya and another black icon.
At the 2023 Daily Front Row Fashion Media Awards on Friday night, the celebrity stylist discussed with PEOPLE that he “definitely sees similarities” between his longtime client and Euphoria star Zendaya, 27, and Donyale Luna, who is believed to be the first Black supermodel. Zendaya is 27 years old. Donyale Luna was the first Black supermodel.
“I think the ancestors are always with us, so yeah, just the beauty and the calmness — I think that’s what they really have in common,” Roach, 45, stated in regard to the similarities between the two women. “Donyale seemed to embody the same qualities that Zendaya always exudes, which are a calm and collected demeanor,” the author writes.
Donyale Luna: Supermodel will be the title of a new documentary on Luna, who her away in Rome in 1979 at the age of 33. The film is scheduled to make its debut on HBO on September 13.
She was the first Black woman to appear on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazines, both of which she did in the 1960s, when she was working as a model and breaking barriers in the profession.
In the year 2020, in order to pay honor to Luna and her legacy, Roach recreated some of the late model’s most memorable photographs, with Zendaya’s assistance, for the 50th anniversary issue of Essence magazine the same year. The actress from Spider-Man: No Way Home channeled Luna in one shot by donning a similar floor-length open-knit dress and sporting a beauty style that was influenced by the 1960s and included drawn-on freckles, graphic eyeliner, and dramatic false eyelashes.
Zendaya discussed her feelings over the significant undertaking in an article that was included within the special issue.
“I am extremely thankful because I wouldn’t be here, standing on the shoulders of giants, if it weren’t for the wonderful and legendary people who have graced the cover of this magazine before me. It means a lot to me that I was able to record this cover at this particular moment in time,” she stated at the time.
She went on to say, “I also felt very excited that Essence allowed Law [Roach] and me to be a part of the creative team and do something that was just a little bit different.” I wanted to pay tribute to Donyale Luna, the first Black supermodel, and had a lot of fun doing so throughout this session.
Zendaya continued by saying, “A lot of what I do, specifically within the fashion industry, is a tribute to fashion icons who came before me — many of whom are Black women.” “I couldn’t be happier with how things came out. I have a great deal of pride in it. It’s one of my all-time favorite cover shoots that I’ve had the opportunity to do.
Roach reminisced about the breathtaking shoot on Friday night, telling PEOPLE that honoring Luna for Essence’s milestone issue “was an easy decision.”
