David Bailey Early Life And Career

Since he was a young boy, he has always had an interest in art and photography. In 1959, he began his training as an apprentice at the John French Studio, where he was introduced to the world of fashion photography.

In 1960, he started working as a photographer for British Vogue, where he remained for almost 15 years, initially as an employee and then as a freelancer. His first year there, he was paid to take photographs. In addition to that, he worked as a freelance writer for various publications.

Bailey’s work in fashion and celebrity portraiture, which was distinguished by stark backgrounds and dramatic lighting effects, revolutionized the stylish but guarded aesthetic of British fashion and celebrity photography, transforming it into something that was more youthful and direct.

His work exemplifies the cultural movement of the 1960s in Britain that aimed to dismantle archaic and inflexible class distinctions by incorporating a “punk” or working-class aesthetic into a variety of artistic items, including clothes.

Bailey himself became a celebrity who exemplified “swinging London”; he was known for his affairs with various celebrated women, among them the model Jean Shrimpton and the actress Catherine Deneuve, whom he married in 1965 and divorced in 1972.

It is believed that he served as the model for the character of Thomas, the photographer, in the film Blow-up (1966), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni.
