Alphonso Boyle Davies is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the Canadian national team as a left defender or winger.

Davies was among the first players born in the 2000s to appear in an MLS match. He joined Bayern from MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps FC in January 2019 on a contract extension through 2023 for a then-record MLS transfer price.  

Davies was selected the 2019-20 Bundesliga Rookie of the Year. He was also a team member who won the continental triple that season, as Bayern won the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League, and the DFB-Pokal.

His parents escaped Liberia’s civil war, seeking safety in a Ghanaian camp where he was born. 

Subsequently, in the quest for a better life, they relocated to Canada, and Alphonso became a Canadian citizen in 2017.

Its eclectic background, which includes Ghana, Liberia, and Canada, represents Alphonso’s identity.

According to several sources, Davies is a Christian. On August 1, 2018, Davies was named to the MLS All-Star roster for the 2018 MLS All-Star Game.

Davies was the fourth youngest of six siblings born to Liberian parents at Buduburam, a refugee camp in Ghana. 

His father, Debeah Davies, and mother, Victoria Davies, grew up in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital.

They came during the Second Liberian Civil War, which displaced over 450,000 Liberians.

The family immigrated to Canada in 2005, finally settling in Edmonton.

Davies moved to Vancouver alone at 15 to join the Whitecaps FC Residency program.

He attended Burnaby Central Secondary School as part of the program.

He got Canadian citizenship on June 6, 2017, after previously being a Liberian national. 

Davies attended Edmonton Catholic School District’s Saint Nicholas Catholic Junior High. “Sports was the thing he wanted to enter,” his high school soccer friend Onesphore Hamis said. “He spoke English, but it was like bad English,” his classmate and fellow Liberian immigrant Chernoh Fahnbulleh said of Davies. 

Davies began playing organized soccer as a kid in Edmonton with Free Footie, an after-school soccer league for inner-city primary school pupils who cannot afford registration fees and equipment or lack transportation to games.

Davies joined the Whitecaps FC Residency in 2015 at 14 after playing for Edmonton Internationals and Edmonton Strikers.
