In 1974, he began commentating on television with Keith Barnes at the Amco Cup on Channel Ten. Ten recruited Warren in 1980 to announce the Melbourne Cup, the first of three Cups he would call for the network. In 1983, he also became the principal Rugby League announcer for Network Ten.

He was supposed to be in charge of Ten’s commentary for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, but he declined. Warren, a fearful flier, had serious misgivings about the trans-Pacific flight and discovered he couldn’t board. 

Warren was sacked by the network in 1986, mainly because it wanted former international player Rex Mossop to replace him as its primary rugby league commentator.
