Mylon was born on October 6, 1944, in Gulfport, Mississippi, the youngest son of the pioneering Southern gospel family, The LeFevres. He began singing and playing guitar with the group when he was old enough.
LeFevre was expelled from a private Catholic high school as an adolescent because his father brought him out to be with the family while they performed at a local performance.
He wrote his debut song, “Without Him,” when he was 17 years old while serving in the Army and earning $84 monthly.
The LeFevres performed at a gospel conference in Memphis while stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. LeFevre hitchhiked nearly 600 kilometers that weekend to get there.
He had no idea Elvis Presley was performing “Without Him” onstage. Elvis requested to meet with LeFevre after the concert. Soon after, Elvis recorded the song for his album, How Great Thou Are, and over a hundred artists recorded it within the following year.
According to LeFevre, the song took about twenty minutes to write, resulting in an initial royalty check of almost $90,000. He used that money to buy his first car, a Chevrolet Corvette, the first of several sports cars he would acquire.
LeFevre joined the Stamps Quartet after being dismissed from the Army (1966–1968). Skylite Records published LeFevre’s debut solo album, New Found Pleasure 1964. Your Only Tomorrow was released by LeFevre in 1968.
