Ruth Handler (1916-2002) was an American businesswoman and inventor best known for inventing the Barbie doll.

She was born Ruth Marianna Mosko in Denver, Colorado, to Polish-Jewish immigrants Ida Mosko and Jacob Mosko.

In 1938, she moved to Los Angeles with her husband, Elliot Handler, and they started a furniture business together.

In 1945, they co-founded Mattel, Inc., a toy company that became famous for its Barbie dolls.

Handler created the Barbie doll in 1959, named after her daughter. 

After struggling with cancer, she also developed prosthetic breasts for cancer survivors through her company, Nearly Me. 

Handler passed away in 2002 at the age of 85.

While there is no information available about her religious beliefs, it is known that she was born to Polish-Jewish immigrants Ida Mosko and Jacob Mosko.

Handler’s father was a blacksmith who flew from Poland to evade serving in the Russian army.

Handler was a tomboy as a child and did not like playing with dolls.

It is possible that Handler was raised in the Jewish faith, but no information is available to confirm this.

She was the youngest of ten children. Her father was a blacksmith who fled from Poland to avoid serving in the Russian army.

Handler’s mother was illiterate when she came in the United States in the steerage section of the steamship.

Handler’s mother’s health was so frail that an older sister reared her.

Handler married Elliot Handler in 1938. They had two children, Barbara and Kenneth.

Handler was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1970. Ruth had a modified radical mastectomy, which was often used at the time to fight the disease. Because of difficulties finding a good breast prosthesis, she founded Nearly Me, a company that developed prosthetic breasts for cancer survivors.

She was buried next to her son, Ken, who died from a tumor in June of the same year.
