Gatwa was born on October 15, 1992, in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda. Tharcisse Gatwa, a journalist with a Degree in Theology from Rwanda’s Karongi District, is his father.
The family fled Rwanda during the 1994 massacre against the Tutsi and landed in Scotland. They were residents of Edinburgh and Dunfermline.
Gatwa went to Boroughmuir and Dunfermline High Schools before coming to Glasgow to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she earned a Master of Arts in Acting in 2013.
During the class of 2022 graduation ceremony, he received an honorary doctorate from the Conservatoire.
Gatwa was accepted into the Dundee Repertory Theatre acting graduate scheme after graduating, and he appeared in various shows, including David Greig’s Victoria.
